About Me

Hi there!  My name is Lindsay.  I’m 24, and I’m married to the best guy in the world.  No seriously…I found THE BEST guy in the world and somehow convinced him to marry  me.  His name is Blake.  We do not have any kids, except for our 4-legged, furry one named Jazzy.

I’m SO lucky

Our little family!

Our Jazzy Girl!

She’s a great cuddler.

I am a graduate of Auburn University.   I love Auburn (WAR EAGLE).  It’s my favorite place in the world, and I am a ridiculously diehard Auburn fan.  I got my bachelor’s degree in Music Education, and I now work full time as a choir teacher for middle school and high school students.  Singing is a big part of my life, and I’m so glad I get to spend my days teaching it!

Blake and me at an Auburn football game. WAR EAGLE!

I really really miss being an Auburn student…

What’s the best part of being a teacher?  SUMMER!  There will be significantly more posts during the summer months than when I’m busy at school.

One thing you should know about me is that, before marrying Blake I was a college kid who ate like most college kids.  I lived on Easy Mac and Chef Boyardee.  And believe me, I am not knocking these two fine culinary delicacies.  To this day, I still love some good ol’ ravioli from a can.  Whenever I wanted to cook “something fancy” I’d make tacos.  Ya know, where ya just cook some ground beef with a packet of taco seasoning and then let the guests actually fix their own plate with the toppings and such.  That was pretty much it.

There were three primary reasons why I didn’t cook:

1.  I hate going grocery shopping.  I don’t know about your particular market of choice, but here in the south, it’s Wal-Mart all the way. And no matter what day or what hour you go shopping (cuz it’s open 24/7), there WILL BE a bunch of screaming babies wailing…there WILL BE ridiculously long lines…there WILL BE those annoying people with 4 carts blocking the aisles and moving as slow as molasses.   And then when you’re all done, you have to hike 8 miles back to your car in the sweltering 98 degree heat. (Southern ladies know what I’m talkin’ bout)

2.  I hate cleaning the kitchen after I’ve cooked.  After I spend time cooking a meal, I’m usually very hot and often sweaty.  Hot stoves and ovens tend to do that to me.   Plus I feel like once the meal is done, I should be too!  I might enjoy the smells and tastes and complexities of cooking…but I really hate the boring, monotonous, back-ache inducing task of doing dishes and wiping counters and such.

3.  Why should I?  Chef Boyardee is AWESOME and Easy Mac even has the word “easy” in the name!

Well here is what changed it all:  Blake.  In case you didn’t believe me before about him being the best guy in the world, you’re about to. He solved all three of these cooking dilemmas.  First, he goes to the store for me.  I give him the list, and he braves the horrors of Wal-Mart.  Second, He does most of the dishes/cleaning.  Once we’re done eating, he steps right up to the sink and gets to those dirty dishes.  I still help with the clean-up, but it’s so nice having him take on the majority of the dirty work.  And finally, he gave me a REASON to cook.  Sure Chef Boyardee and Easy Mac are delicious and simple, but is that really what I want to set in front of my husband?  Being a teacher allows me to get home at least an hour or two before he does, so I felt compelled to use that time to prepare dinner each night so that it would be ready when he gets home.  I want him to look forward to stepping into our home, smell dinner on the stove, and know that I had put time and effort into this meal for him to enjoy.

So now that I’ve been married, and been cooking, for almost two years, I’ve realized that I really REALLY enjoy cooking!  I hope that this blog will help you discover how easy cooking really can be and get some new ideas about recipes and meal planning.

  3. Almost everyone in my husband’s family went to Auburn so I see why I’ve been enjoying your recipes – I feel the War Eagle connection. 🙂

    • Haha that’s awesome! WAR EAGLE! Hopefully our football team will be able to make something of this season….maybe…

  4. Hi Lindsay! You have a beautiful blog and I love how readers can get to know about you – this makes the recipes much more fun. I’m drawn to your sweeter items (shocker)…they look fab! =)

  5. I just wanted you to know that I really enjoy your blog. The food always looks delicious, and although I am not the best cook, your blog inspires me to try different things and I am improving. On my blog, I nominated you for an award for your blog. If you would like to, then you can accept the award and post on your blog the same eight questions with your own answers, followed by nominating some of your favorite blogs. Keep on sharing recipes! 🙂

  6. Your Normal Cooking recipes and photos are great. Just remember this what cook at any restaurant does his own dishes? LOL. I tell that to my family will sometimes when they enjoy my cooking but they don’t like the mess. I help out , but that is my thought as the cook of the house. Also I used to be a waiter at Denny’s and the Olive Garden. So in my 8 years at waiting tables I never once seen the cook wash dishes. 🙂

I seen your blog listed as a favorite over at “Recipes or Reservations.” Normal Cooking caught my attention. Had to pop over and see what it was all about. Very amazing, well organized blog, as well as the delectable photography of the foods you create in your kitchen.

I would like to invite you over to Savor the Food. We would appreciate your comments and readership.

    Thanks for sharing.

    • Hi Chef Randall! Thank you for your kind words! I’m definitely thankful that I have someone else to do all the cleanup for me! And I will be checking out your blog, too. I’m also happy to know that Recipes or Reservations listed me as a favorite! Thanks for letting me know how you found my blog. Hope you have a great day!

  7. Hello, my name is Amber, I have to say ditto on all of your reasons for not liking or wanting to cook. I only have one child and so cooking meals in the first place seems like a waste of time for only a couple of people. Then again like you, I don’t want to eat ramon noodles all of the time or digorno pizza (maybe mispelled) :). So I’d watch Rachel Ray and whoever else was on, even googling “simple inexpensive dishes”, then I’d read the ingredients and I do not have that kind of money to spend on 20 ingredients when I’m on a budget. So one day I went on Pinterest and found your Crockpot Lasagna (which by the way I’m cooking now for the first time, and smells great) ! And that lead me to your normal cooking sight. I have to honestly say it is exactly normal cooking and affordable and doable! This is what I’ve been searching for forever!! Thank you very very much and please continue to post!!!
    God Bless,
    Amber

    • Wow, thank you so much Amber! I’m so glad you’ve found some helpful recipes here. Your sweet words are an encouragement to me and make me feel like the time I put into this blog is worth it!

  8. Hi Lindsay! My name is Gail and I am probably older than your Mother!
I saw your shrimp recipes and immediately signed up for your blog. I am am interior designer and when I am working I come home tired. We also travel a lot. I don’t mind cooking, but I feel exactly like you do about the shopping and the cleaning up!
It is always easier to go out to a restaurant and Dallas has many of them!
I have a wonderful husband like you do! He is always willing to shop and he always offers to clean up after our dinner. He has two blood cancers now and may not live much longer. The main one is MDS, like Robin Williams on TV. He is in no pain which is a huge blessing, but he gets very tired. Restaurants are not very germ free and he needs to limit them.
I now have a huge reason to cook well and cook things that are healthy, taste good and are attractive. You have inspired me and I look forward to making many of your recipes.
    Thank you, Lindsay!

    • Gail, Wow I am honored that you think so highly of my blog! I am terribly sorry to hear about your husband, but I can tell that you are a wife who takes good care of him! I hope that the two find many recipes on here that you can cook together and enjoy together! Thank you for your sweet comment.

  9. Love your site,,, and your family. I love that you include your dog as your baby. In addition to my 2 legged sons and husband, I have 5 dogs,, 2 of them are rescue. You have a great blog and I look forward to trying MANY of the wonderful recipes that you have posted.
    Thanks

  10. I’ve recently switched my food blog over to be self-hosted which I hope will make it more user-friendly in the future. As a result, if you were following Can’t Stay Out of the Kitchen via email, WordPress, or using RSS feeds through Google Reader or some other way, you are no longer subscribed. If you wish to continue receiving future posts from my blog you will need to re-subscribe. Sorry for the inconvenience, Teresa.

  11. I’m looking forward to following your blog. I too live in the South (Mississippi) and I know I will relate to your way of cooking – like normal people. It’s just me and my husband of 36 years now, so going from a family of 5 to just 2 has been a challenge in that I don’t like to cook anymore. When everyone is at home I love cooking for them, but just for two is boring. I’m hoping your blog helps get me out of that mindframe. By the way, we are big ALABAMA fans….don’t hold that against me….ROLL TIDE!

    • Hi Robin. I hope you find some recipes that you can use with your family! Even if it’s just the two of you :-). And I suppose I can look past the fact that you’re bama fans. WAR EAGLE!

  12. What a lovely blog, what a touching story! And you do have a lovely blog with great recipes. I have put your blog under my list of favourites!! Wish you all the best and look forward to your posts!

  13. I think Blake is the “lucky” one. Loved your story!! I’ve been married for almost 29 years and I still take a lot of pride in putting down a great meal for my hubby every day. My “love for cooking and baking” has definitely grown throughout the years and I’m hopelessly addicted.

    • Thank you! I guess he and I are both pretty lucky :-). By the way, I love your blog name. My parents have 2 mini dachshunds named Simba and Nala…and they’re always in the kitchen waiting for some crumbs!

  14. Hi! I found your blog through a RecipeLion Quick and Easy Recipes email click-through. I’ve already ‘liked’ you on Facebook, shared a couple of your recipes on FB and posted one of your recipes on PInterest. I hope that others will do the same and get your blog more exposure – it deserves it. So many blogs (and pins, and tv shows) have recipes that require so many odd ingredients that I can’t see myself ever using again, while your recipes appear to have things that, if I don’t already have them on hand, I don’t mind buying as I’m sure I’ll find another use for them. Can’t wait to try a whole bunch of your recipes.
I feel compelled to add, also, that’s it’s wonderful to be able to read your comments and instructions and not be slapped in the face with my pet peeve: glaring spelling errors. You’re concise yet friendly, well-spoken, easy to read, and can spell. YAY!!
Keep up the great work. I can’t wait to see what else you have to share with us!

    • Angel,
Thank you so much for the many compliments, and thank you for sharing my blog via social media! It makes me feel so good to hear feedback like this. I truly try to find “normal” ingredients for “normal” cooks, and it’s nice to know you are benefiting from it! Also, I totally share your pet peeve and do my best to write clearly! 🙂 Thank you again, and I hope you find many more recipes you’ll love!
